Handmade Midcentury African Maasai Hide Warrior Shield
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Maasai Shield hand painted with pigments on hide. This stunning elliptical graphic shield was probably owned by a warrior herder as younger warriors were only permitted to have black, white or gray pigments to decorate their shields. The red pigment was traditionally achieved by mixing earth in blood or the sap of a fruit, white from clay and black from burnt gourd skin. This piece remains in wonderful condition, with normal wear, consisting with age and use. Very nice decorative item.
