Every piece of vintage furniture that leaves our Northbrook, IL workshop takes a little of us with it. We hunt for it, restore it, photograph it, and then one day it goes off to a new home. We keep a record of every one of them in The Firebird Archive, our full catalog of sold mid-century and vintage designer furniture. Here are eight sold pieces we still talk about.
1. John Widdicomb Chinoiserie Sideboard
John Widdicomb of Grand Rapids built furniture for serious collectors, and this Chinoiserie sideboard showed why. Hand-painted panels, original brass and a finish that only needed a gentle clean. See what's in our Chinoiserie collection now.
2. Drexel Heritage Chin Hua Dining Table, Corinthian Collection
At over 11 feet with all three leaves in, this Chin Hua burlwood dining table was the biggest table we have ever sold. Raymond Sobota's Chin Hua line for Drexel Heritage blends Asian forms with Hollywood glamour, and it is one of the most collected Drexel designs today.
3. Henredon Scene One Campaign Chest
Henredon's Scene One collection is what campaign furniture looks like at its best: crisp lines, brass corners and drawers that close like they were made yesterday. This Scene One chest sold within days. Browse our current campaign furniture.
4. Dixie Transitional Highboy in Pink
Proof that a newly painted piece can be the star of the room. We gave this Dixie highboy a soft pink finish and kept its original brass pulls. Looking for one of your own? Shop our highboy dressers.
5. Svend Aage Madsen Danish Desk and Chair
A rare matched set from Danish designer Svend Aage Madsen. This desk and chair is a reminder that good mid-century design never needs to shout. More pieces like it live on our Mid Century Modern page.
6. Chinoiserie Gold Lotus Coffee Table
Gold lotus flowers and birds across a black lacquer base. This Chinoiserie coffee table got more messages than almost anything we have listed. It is one of hundreds of finds recorded in our sold furniture archive.
7. Mount Airy Hollywood Regency Sideboard in Green
Deep green paint and gleaming brass made this Mount Airy sideboard pure Hollywood Regency. Find similar statement pieces in Hollywood Regency and Buffets & Sideboards.
8. Hickory Furniture Campaign Burlwood Chests, a Pair
Matched pairs are hard to find, and burlwood pairs even harder. These Hickory Furniture campaign chests were snapped up as nightstands almost as soon as they went live. Browse current nightstands.
Why we keep an archive
Our archive shows the makers we trust, the quality we look for, and the finishes we do best. Interior designers use it to brief us on what to source next, and many of our clients find their next piece by asking for "something like that one."
